Baakenhafen is the largest harbour basin in the harbour city of Hamburg. In addition to the large road bridge to the far west, the new crossing forms the second connection between the northern development and the southern peninsula. The cantilever steel structure of the bridge, with a span of around 65 metres, was developed by gmp and the structural engineers Knippers Helbig.<\/p>\n

Our competition entry and goal was to create glare-free lighting to provide an unobstructed 360\u00b0 view over the water, from the Elbphilharmonie to the Elbbr\u00fccken train station at night. For this purpose, an LED light strip in warm light colour 3000 K with asymmetrical beam geometry was positioned under the wide handrail. Lamellar inserts are used for longitudinal glare control. Passers-by cross the bridge without being exposed to directed light. Only the pleasant reflection of the running surface illuminates the scene; the side support plates and the handrail posts are not illuminated. The radiation limitation also prevents reflections of the LED points on the water surface. In this way, the bridge is presented to the outside world free of any visual ballast and a visually calmer environment is created above the water.<\/p>\n

The challenge was to equip the handrail lighting with submersible IP68 luminaires, including electrical cabling, as flooding of the bridge cannot be ruled out due to the location. To avoid the risk of electric shock, the system is operated with low voltage and the operating devices are housed externally in a higher control cabinet. Another challenge was the trouble-free implementation of the 60 m long bridge lighting on both sides, with approx. 75 m of supply cable in combination with dimmability. The luminaire as a unit from the operating device to the luminaire was part of our planning assignment.<\/p>\n

The result is a calm lighting concept that blends harmoniously into the surroundings.<\/p>\n
